    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Good Grief! Is it possible that the 2014 summer resort season is over with for the North Woods area (BWCAW) of Minnesota? We can't believe it came and went that quickly, but what fun everyone had- renewal and strengthening of friendships, storytelling, sharing of fish stories, and generally having a wonderful time away from the "real world".
    Anyway, the summer has passed and fall is descending upon us. We have pulled the motors, winterized them, and put them to "bed". We also have turned over the boats so they don't fill up with snow.
    As you can see, there is no traffic on the lake, which when we snapped the picture was beautifully flat and even glossy. Occasionally, we may see a motor boat or a lone canoer, but most people have retreated to the southland for the winter. In addition, most of the sea gulls and loons have headed south to warmer waters.
    This year, the changing of the colors for the fall has been interesting. The trees generally begin to turn about the last week of September and continue through the first week of October. The maples are the first to turn, but then up here, the aspens and birch quickly follow along with various scrub bushes. Because we had so much rain during the summer, the "turning of the colors" has lasted much longer. As a matter of fact, even as we write this note at the middle of the month of October, the trees, though past their peak are still beautiful.
    Next, the scrub oaks, which grow out of rocks and are not the mighty oaks some of you may be used to seeing, turn a dark red or maroon color, and still beautify the area.
    Even this giant mushroom entered into the race for beauty this fall. With the wet marshes, they were finally given a chance to shine.
    Because we had a massive amount of snow last winter and good rains this summer, the lakes were full and offered great pictures of the amount of water going over the falls at Prairie Portage. We usually do not have that amount of water flowing at this time of year.
    Of course, we cannot forget to include a magnificent picture of a sunset taken from our house. Yes, we look forward to them, and no we never tire of them. Each one is always beautifully different.
    On a different note, we still do not know the dates during which we can submit applications to the lottery. We will let you know as soon as we know, We are betting at about the middle of December through January 14th. Stay tuned.
