    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Summer is upon us here at Custom Cabins-near Ely, MN-with cool temperatures and bright sunshine. While we in the northeastern part of Minnesota have received an abundance of rain, we definitely are not flooded like parts of the northwest and southern regions are. Our lakes which are located in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness are a bit high, but the levels are definitely not interfering with fishing. As an added plus, the trees are extremely green and lush. It is beautiful.
    This beautiful Northern Pike was caught on Basswood Lake. It measured 44 inches, but weighed only about 16 pounds. Normally this sized fish would be put back in the lake, but the gentleman who caught it was unable to revive it after a hard fight to land it. Because it didn't weigh much in comparison to its length, we are guessing it was a much older fish and possibly ready for the "home".
    These crappies and blue gill were biting like crazy on worms and leeches. Even though these are considered pan fish, there are limits on the number each person can catch. These people pooled their fish and staged their catch for the picture.
    This father and son duo had a great day with these fish. Toward the bottom of the picture one can see there are a lot more fish in their net.
    We mentioned that we have had sunshine and cool temperatures, however, on June 29th, the temperatures really dropped and the skies opened up with rain and pea-sized hail. Yes, in the middle of summer we had hail. The picture shows exactly how the hail came down off of the roof. We did not sweep it into a pile exaggerating the amount of hail we got.
    One of our guests set up a motion activated camera on the far bank of the lake at the wild life feeding station. The camera captured these turkey vultures enjoying their breakfast.
    On a different day, we were fortunate enough to be visiting the feeding station with our camera and caught this group of seven eagles. The eagles without the white heads and tails are referred to as immature. They usually do not mature and get their highly recognizable white head and tail until they are about five years old.
    Naturally, when a group of any kind gathers-animals or people-it seems as though there is usually one "clown" among them. In this picture, it appears as though one of the eagles is excited about the food that was there and was trying to tap dance to express his joy.
    Our wild flowers are now in full bloom and really brighten the yard. While these two types are considered non-native invasive species, in other words weeds, they are delightful to see.
    So the fish are biting, the birds are chirping, and the flowers blooming. We would invite all of you to join us and help us enjoy our summer paradise.
